A font is a set of one or more letterforms, each represented as a digital image of a glyph or character. The fonts used in modern English are based on the historic models used in European calligraphy. There are over 400 different typefaces from which to choose from. In some oblique cases, these typefaces have been digitized with software and then printed on paper as art prints or sold as photographs through galleries and commercial printing services. In other instances they have been taken as-is from an analog source such as the engraved plates of a press, cast metal type, printed on silk material, drawn by hand with ink brushes and pencils etc... We find examples of contemporary calligraphy fonts in multiple forms of the written word, from the pages of a wide range of magazines including Graffiti and Lowrider magazines, to the album covers of various audio recordings including those by Daft Punk and Jimi Hendrix. Traditional typefaces have been adopted as Contemporary Calligraphy by a wide range of typographers. Modern calligraphy has been practiced as a hobby since the late 1800s. But it was not until the 20th century that it became a popular art form globally. In the United States—particularly from California—it gained widespread attention following an exhibition of calligraphic artworks by Dr. Seuss at the San Francisco Museum of Art, in 1958. In 1971, an anthology of calligraphic works by contemporary artists was published, entitled "Calligraphy", edited by the New York City-based gallery owner Lawrence Alloway. Among these were examples by Robert Motherwell, Tom Phillips, Frank Stella, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock. Modern American calligraphy is influenced greatly by penmanship styles found in European writing traditions. With the advent of the typewriter in the mid-19th century—and its high mechanical production costs—and with typists considered less skilled than skilled scriveners, American handwriting styles became more legible and elegant. cfa1e77820
