The Message is a 2008 documentary film directed by M. Night Shyamalan, based on the novel of the same name by award-winning author Karen Thompson Walker. The film portrays the apocalyptic consequences of global warming caused by spiraling greenhouse gas emissions. It focuses on how these consequences are felt most acutely in Africa, specifically Africa's Sahel region, where recurring droughts have created a humanitarian crisis that dwarfs all other problems afflicting the continent today. The film was released in select theaters and on television in selected countries on Earth Day 2009. The film details the coming hyper-drought in the Sahel region, which is expected to kill millions of people, create more than 7 million refugees, and will leave large portions of Africa impoverished, just as the region was emerging from poverty. The Sahel's severe water shortage shows how global warming can cause already vulnerable regions to collapse. To depict this impending disaster on screen, Shyamalan reunited with cinematographer Phedon Papamichael after Burn After Reading (2008), who had worked with him on Signs (2002), I am Legend (2007) and Lady in the Water (2006). He also reunited with composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard after Philadelphia (1993), The Sixth Sense (1999) and Signs. It was filmed entirely in Africa. The documentary premiered on April 21, 2009 at the Washington D.C. Earth Day, and also had a red carpet premiere on June 13. It aired on Showtime on April 24 and 25, 2009. In the United States, ad revenue from the television airing went to the Alliance for Climate Protection. In other countries, 100% of ad revenue from theatrical screenings will be donated to environmental charities. In France, all money from theatrical distribution will go to "Les Restos du Cœur", a French organization helping feed those who can't afford food through a network of rest homes and social kitchens across France. It was released on DVD and Blu-ray disc in the United States on August 18, 2009. It included Shyamalan's 2007 short film "The Night of the Hunter", which stars the same lead actor, Peter Mullan. As of 2017, it is available on Netflix. The film was generally panned by critics. Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 17% based on reviews from 23 critics. On Metacritic, the film had an average score of 32 out of 100 based on nine reviews, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews". In the United Kingdom, "" was released on DVD and Blu-ray from MGM Home Entertainment. In a special interview with the producer of the documentary, Shyamalan said that he was planning to make a sequel. At one point it had been set for a release in 2010 but has been delayed since then. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Documentary Feature and Best Original Song ("Until It's Gone"). One of its major critics is astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson who is quite vocal in his criticism of the film, saying "It's not science when Hollywood does it." He also refers to The Message as "an intelligent argument about total ignorance". cfa1e77820
